Founded by Henry Ford's son Edsel in 1939, Mercury was intended to be the more upscale cousin to Ford's lineup both before and after World War II. And while the brand, eventually sold within the Lincoln-Mercury division, proved successful in the '50s, '60s and '70s, Mercury's luster was gone by the '80s, when Ford had succumbed to doing little more for Mercury than badge-engineering existing Ford models. With growing apathy on the part of both its dealers and customers, Mercury was shuttered in 2011.
If shopping for a pre-owned Mercury today, know that the Grand Marquis, which shared most of its spec with Lincoln's Town & Country and Ford's Crown Vic, will outlast most of its owners. Sables are rebadged versions of the Ford Taurus, while going back some two decades Mercury's Villager was produced alongside Nissan's Quest. Despite its reputation as a dropped brand, a good used example is a viable consideration as a pre-owned prospect.
