Prior to World War II, Alfa Romeo was a prestige brand, fully competitive with Bugatti on the track and Bentley in the showroom. After the war, with Europe's economy and manufacturing capability devastated, it became a manufacturer of more accessible - yet still sporting - sedans, coupes and convertibles. And beginning in the U.S. in the late '50s, it became a brand whose drivers essentially defined 'enthusiast'.
After almost twenty years removed from the U.S, Alfa Romeo returned - within Fiat showrooms - to the U.S. market. Initially Alfa offered only the 2-place 4C coupe and spider, which are intended to be competitive with Porsche's Boxster and Cayman. In 2017 Alfa showrooms should boast both a new 3-Series competitor, the Giulia 4-door sedan, as well as a soon-to-follow X3 competitor, the recently confirmed Stelvio. For those wanting day-to-day functionality with a non-conforming take, there are few better options - at least in the U.S. market - than Alfa Romeo.
